Can I get free legal advice?

If you have a dispute about care or guardianship matters affecting a child, you may be eligible for a session of free advice under the Family Legal Advice Service.

Eligibility depends on your income. Please let us know when you call for an appointment and we can help check whether you are likely to be eligible.

What will it cost me to see a lawyer?

We strive to offer value-for-money legal services. Some matters, such as buying or selling a house, refinancing, or preparing wills, may be offered on a fixed-fee basis.

For other matters, including separation, your lawyer will usually record the time spent working for you. This can include meetings, letters, preparation, drafting documents, and follow-up work.

Will you work for me on Legal Aid?

Our lawyers are approved Legal Aid providers for family law. Legal Aid may be available for eligible clients in areas including:

• Family violence matters
• Care and protection of children
• Day-to-day care and contact
• Guardianship
• Paternity
• Protection of Personal and Property Rights Act matters

We do not offer Legal Aid services for relationship property, child support, spousal maintenance, or disputing wills.

Do I qualify for Legal Aid?

The Ministry of Justice decides whether you qualify for Legal Aid. Their decision takes into account your income, assets, and the nature of your legal matter.

If you think you may be eligible, please tell us and bring confirmation of your income and a recent bank account statement to your first appointment.

Do I have to go to Court?

Not always. Many family issues can be resolved through discussion, negotiation, or mediation.

Court applications are usually needed only for urgent matters, such as protection orders, or where a dispute cannot be resolved another way.
